Startling News About So-Called Science-Based Medicine

December 2, 2014

A report on the most common medical procedures reveals that only 36% have any scientific evidence to support them...You read that right, only 36%! You have better odds flipping a coin! Yet, we far too often blindly trust that modern medicine is based on only the most cutting edge, science-based protocols. It appears that this isn't the case. So what does this mean to you as a patient? For starters, it should be a loud wake up call for the need to take a far more proactive approach to our health. As comforting as may be to believe that "doctors know best," this isn't always the case.

I recognize that many people don't feel they have the time to devote to pouring over research prior to seeing their doctor for every little problem. But maybe that's just the point. We could all benefit from embracing one of the most basic philosophical tenets of chiropractic, that "the power that made the body, heals the body." Our body was designed to be self-healing and self-regulating. Doctors (myself included) don't do any healing. The body itself is what does the healing. It is extremely arrogant, and ignorant to think otherwise. I once had a very wise doctor once tell me that a doctors job is to humor the patient while their body heals itself.

This doesn't mean that doctors don't have a role to play in our healthcare. What I believe this recent news means is that we should be extremely cautious and conscientious with who we select to be trusted members of our personal healthcare team...Rather than passively choosing a single provider from our insurance panel. When we seek out our healthcare team, we seek those who are the best in their respective fields.

Finally, consider following the 4 pillars of informed healthcare decisions. They are:

Research: Is there any scientific research to support the proposed treatment?

Clinical Evidence: Are others doing this type of treatment? If so, how many? How long? etc.

Historical Precedent: How long has this or that particular treatment intervention been around for? A year or so?  5 years? 10 years? Hundreds or thousands of years?

Personal Intuition: Does the particular treatment approach make sense? Does it feel like the right decision? Is there a reasonable rationale behind it? Check out our newest chiropractor videos.
