Your Body Will Love You For This

April 6, 2015

We have a problem!

We are eating more and more over-refined, genetically modified, chemically altered “food” these days. We are putting into our body, nutrient depleted fillers, and depriving ourselves of the natural foods we were designed to consume.

Did you know the dietary guidelines say you need five to thirteen servings of fruits and vegetables a day? Depending on how many calories you are taking in, that’s about 2 ½ - 6 ½ cups. How are you going to get all those fruits and veggies?

Research shows when you are consuming the recommended amount, you are half as likely to develop cancer. That’s huge news! Not to mention it lowers heart disease, improves immunity, increases energy, supports the brain, and aids in weight loss.

The CDC, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, has published a list of the top “powerhouse” fruits and vegetables, based on nutrient density (numbers in parentheses are the nutrient density score)

Watercress (100.0)
Chinese cabbage (91.99)
Chard (89.27)
Beet green (87.08)
Spinach (86.43)
Chicory (73.36)
Leaf lettuce (70.73)
Parsley (65.59)
Romaine lettuce (63.48)
Collard green (62.49)

It seems as if leafy green vegetables are dominating the list. Some of these you may not have even heard about or won’t be able to find at your local grocery store in the United States (sad news for us). Spinach though, is usually easily obtained. So let’s start with spinach.

There is always the spinach salad option, but sometimes you might want to switch it up. Another excellent way to get the raw nutrients from spinach, and to get plenty of it, is to either juice it or put it into smoothies. Its light flavor makes spinach an excellent choice to blend with other ingredients.

Here are a couple recipes to get you started…

Our juice recipe:
THE GREEN GOODNESS
Ingredients:
½ Head of Romaine
1 Handful of Spinach
2 Kale Leaves
10 Sprigs of Cilantro
2 Apples (Fuji or Granny Smith)
½ Lime
Wash the ingredients well. Juice them in the order listed.
Serve immediately.

Our smoothie recipe:
THE SHREK SHAKE
Ingredients:
1 Handful of spinach
½ Avocado
1 Cup vanilla almond milk
Your choice of protein (i.e. chocolate or vanilla whey powder)
1 T Chia seeds (optional)
crushed ice
Blend well. Serve immediately.

So whether you prefer the juice or the smoothie option, either way, you are fitting in a powerhouse vegetable that your body will love you for. Call us to know more about benefits of a chiropractor treatment.
